Eric Schmidt, Novell CEO, Named Co-Chair of The Aspen Institute's
Forum on Communications and Society

WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Aspen Institute today named Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of software developer Novell, Inc., co-chair of the Institute's Forum on Communications and Society (FOCAS). Dr. Schmidt joins 25 chief executives from the private and public sectors as a member of FOCAS, and will share chairman responsibilities with Reed Hundt, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

The FOCAS is a CEO-only forum convened annually by the Institute's Communications and Society Program to encourage broader dialogue among corporate, nonprofit, foundation, and government leaders on the societal impact of new communications and information technologies. Members develop collaborative strategies for how these technologies can be employed for the greater benefit of society. Current members include the chief executives of AT&T, CBS, Children's Television Workshop, Columbia Capital Corporation [OTC BB:CLCK - news], Discovery Communications, Hubbard Broadcasting, PBS, TDS Telecom, Television USA, Time Warner, Univision, The National PTA, National Council of La Raza, Schools and Libraries Corporation, Communities in Schools, ETS, NARUC, the mayors of Baltimore and Dallas, the chairman of the FCC, and the heads of The Pew Charitable Trusts and The Markle Foundation.

At Novell, Dr. Schmidt is responsible for the overall strategy and direction of a major networking software provider. Prior to joining Novell in April 1997, Dr. Schmidt spent 14 years with Sun Microsystems, including three years as Chief Technology Officer. During his tenure with Sun, Dr. Schmidt earned international recognition as an Internet pioneer and was instrumental in the development of the Java programming language.

The 1998 FOCAS will meet in Aspen, Colorado on August 7-9. The goal is to develop public-private collaborations that will improve the level of information literacy in America. Previous meetings have addressed other aspects of education and technology, including connecting schools to the Internet, lifelong learning, and employability issues.
