ASND vs. USRX: From Barron's "PANIC NO MORE".
Wick: U.S. Robotics looks interesting.

Q: There's been some excitement about its new 56.6K modem.
But not everyone seems convinced that it will really work
for most users. And there's some controversy about the
competing standards from Ascend and Rockwell International.
Wick: There's a perception that U.S. Robotics is just a
modem company. Well, then what's Ascend? People say, oh,
Ascend is a systems company. But they don't control their
own destiny - they buy Rockwell modems.

If you're an Internet service provider, and you want to
accommodate these new modems, you have a choice of adding
capacity with either a U.S. Robotics modem hub or an Ascend
hub. You've got to think twice about going with Ascend, I
think. To upgrade the Ascend product, you've got to swap out
a lot of cards, which is expensive and a pain in the neck.
The U.S. Robotics modems can be upgraded from software. I'm
surprised Ascend hasn't come unraveled.
