Siecor Announces Joint Effort For ADSL POTS Splitter Solutions

HICKORY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1998--Siecor announced today that it will provide GTE with an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) Splitter solution that supports the implementation of this new technology. As previously announced, GTE Network Services - the incumbent local exchange carrier unit of GTE Corp [NYSE:GTE - news]. - will offer network-based ADSL service beginning in June. As part of its service offering, GTE will install Siecor(R) ADSL POTS Splitter solutions in its central offices and at the customer premises to provide the highest quality service.

''Working with GTE, we have been able to develop POTS Splitters for the central office that minimize installation cost and maintain traditional wiring practices,'' according to Barry Slotnick, Siecor Business Development Manager.

The recent deployment of Siecor ADSL POTS Splitter Modules for GTE represents the first application involving Main Distribution Frame (MDF) installations. Locating the POTS Splitter on the MDF provides telcos with several advantages including reduced central office cabling and convenient access to the individual POTS and ADSL signals at the main frame. Siecor ADSL POTS Splitters located on the MDF are used for the full-featured ADSL as well as ''Splitterless G.Lite'' ADSL services.

For applications requiring customer premises POTS Splitters, Siecor offers the ADSL NID POTS Splitter (remote end splitter). One version is packaged in a Protected Terminating Device(TM) (PTD(R)) line module for installation inside a Siecor Network Interface Device (NID) NI-2000 series. A RJ-45 test jack provides the data transmission path. The integrated module combines the High Speed Data and POTS single with the station protection and customer demarcation functions into a single field replaceable plug-in unit that greatly simplifies the installation process.

In addition, the Indoor Flush Mount ADSL POTS Splitter is excellent for multidwelling applications that function as a normal station apparatus, such as a phone wall jack outlet. The sleek design provides the functional means of the ADSL Splitter without drawing attention to the Splitter located in the home. Several other versions are planned to be offered to provide alternative packaging solutions.

''The MDF Splitter simplifies and streamlines the installation of the ADSL circuit and ensures that customers will continue to receive reliable telephone services, plus the added data service of ADSL,'' said Mike Osborn, GTE manager-technology testing. ''Equally important is that the NID splitter allows us to install ADSL to the customer premises without the wiring complexity and bulkiness associated with desktop splitters.

''The NID splitter enables reliable and simultaneous POTS and data service mounted inside GTE's NID enclosure on the outside of the building and provides a clear demarcation point and ensures interoperability with the customers' telephone instruments,'' added Osborn.
