I spoke to my dentist about fen-phen and prophylactic use of antibiotics, and he explained that they would only be required UNTIL the former fen-phen user had had a complete check-up to determine whether there was heart valve damage, or not. My dentist said he would want a note from the treating physician after that determination had been made, and there certainly would be no further need for antibiotics unless there was indeeed valve damage. Perhaps it would be better to have a thorough discussion with your dentist, rather than relying on his receptionist for this kind of information. It is hard to imagine with today's awareness of the danger of unnecessary use of antibiotics, that very many doctors or dentists would require lifetime prophylactic use in these situations.
