Still waiting on the FAX of the product line details to respond

Of course these numbers are neither impressive nor do they indicate a turnaround.

My first impression is that they found something to sell the 3.X base, the Year 2000 upgrade, and just finding that at these low levels of revenue makes a difference in the numbers.

They were asked in the conference call basically if they could find anything else, if they expected a spike in revenues from this product or from NDS for NT, or from ANY NOS add-on product and the answer Schmidt gave was "the numbers are not large" so far but we remain optimistic. And wait until Netware 5 etc. etc.

I get the impression they still can't get a product strategy together that will work. They are close and they are thinking real hard, but there isn't any spark of marketing genius or product creativity.

For example MSFT has Windows CE in the transportable computer arena. Novell has nothing. Will it wake up after the transportables have taken over a segment of the network market and discover they missed this segment like they missed the internet?

Schmidt comes from a mini-computer background. These guys just are not used to feature reduction in software to go after the niche customer in targeted areas. He just doesn't have a PC outlook. Look at MSFT with its Back Office product line---it builds a small business NOS and then adds the complete applications package.

Schmidt at one point said he wants more ZEN like products to build on NDS. Well my question is simple, with one billion dollars how come you haven't worked out a method for getting bright innovators to work for Novell yet? Its no excuse that companies to buy are overvalued. You've got a new area here in the directory that you are touting, so go find the people that can make it happen and give them the incentive. I know for a fact that most engineers would love to go into business for themselves and there are several stages before you have to buy them out at overvalued prices. The first stage is finding someone to sponsor their ideas. Are you doing that Eric? Or are you waiting for Stone to come up with "safe" companies to buy to take to the braindead BOD for approval?
