A,

Of course you are correct about the NEED for the 400Mhz units! Who needs them anyway! Just a waste of money. I guess that DELL will be to only company producing them then, right? I mean CPQ, HWP and IBM wouldn't be THAT STUPID to produce a machine that nobody needed, would they? Just a waste of resources, and for sure, with the results that these companies have been showing, they don't have any extra money to THROW AWAY!

I'll tell you for sure that I'm not gonna' buy a 400Mhz computer - EVER!

I kinda' have my heart set on a 1Ghz model! Yeah, that's the ticket! Something that I can really do 'real time video', 'speech recognition' and 'high speed communications' all at the same time! Yes-sir-re, bob-a-rino! I can see it now, DELL of course, since they will be the only company DUMB enough to MAKE the 'commodity, box'.

Let's see now - (dreaming)

1 Ghz processor - natch!
200Mhz - motherboard - Of course!
1 G - RDRAM - 800Mhz, or maybe 2 G - maybe more!
SCSI3 (Fast and Wide) - that ought to get the 'throughput' up there!
USB - that'll increase that 'serial' buss.

Let's see about storage, ah, at 20Meg a minute of compressed video, I have 14 VHS tapes that I shot on those Alaska trips, and need to compress that to 1 tape, so I will need to 'store' 15 tapes. So, let's see, that's 15 tapes times 2 hours (each) = 30 hours, or 1,800 minutes. At 20 Meg per minute, let's see, that's 36,000 Meg! By golly, that seems to be about 36G of disk space just for the Video. Another 10 G or so for other programs, and that's 48 G. I'm using Maxtor 8.4 G drives now, and 6 time 8.4 gives ~50 G.

I'll keep this 'ole 'beater' 21" monitor 1600x1200, and the Altec Sound system. I hope that I will be able to use my 1.5G SyQuest removable disk drive for backups. Have to wait and see!

Of course, by the time I go to purchase the system, I will think of a couple of other items I need. (Maybe a little 'more speed or memory'. I have been told that you NEVER have enough 'memory', 'speed', 'disk storage' or 'money in the bank'!)

Regards,

Ken
