On deferred revenue

If someone buys 4.11 and the upgrade, I would guess that the upgrade part of the sale has to be counted as deferred revenue and only gets figured into earnings when the product ships.

So if Novell starts giving away Net 5 to new 4.11 customers then the entire sale will not count in this quarter. And what will the quarter look like if it contains no NOS sales!

In other words if they can't get revenues from other products, they can't afford to give away the one that they think will get them revenues. And that says a lot doesn't it.

The upgrade is a compromise. However the revenues from the upgrade must have to be differed to the 4th quarter. The question is what is the discount and how will Novell report sales of the upgrades in the current quarter?

Correct me if I'm wrong.
