Steve, nice pulling together of the points.

Intel's main thrust will be toward the high-end systems, particularly when they introduce their workstation/server & mainframe busting Merced chip. This will be the first major departure from the X86 instruction set compatible uPs for mainstream computing applications. To start out, the Merced will be able to execute X86 about as well as a mid-range Pentium. It's real strength will be in executing programs compiled for the new instruction set. It is also going to be much more oriented toward distributed processing with true scalability. Intel hopes to move the high end of the market toward this new system and they have a good chance of being successful. This shift will take up to several years to take place; software will need to develop around it.

Intel needs to keep low-mid range PC/server systems market share from slipping too much in order to propel the high end and keep the factories churning until the new products gain momentum. These are distinct market segments to a large extent but Intel can't afford to divorce themselves from the low end before its time.

It's hard to tell, but Intel may end up ceding a large portion of the mass PC market to its rivals. They won't be able to maintain anywhere near the 55%-60% margins they have grown accustomed to.
