Penni, Christine - I think it's worth pointing out that the boy in yesterday's crime did not use an assault weapon. The primary weapon was a semi-auto rifle chambered 22 Long Rifle, a rimfire round. Rimfire is characterized by low muzzle energy and is thus lousy at killing but maims with the best of'em.
No cop or soldier would want to carry a rimfire for any reasonable defense purpose.
So calling a 22, semi-auto or otherwise, an assault weapon is a stretch at best and deliberate obfuscation at worst. The sort of thing we should not let the media get away with as the editors pursue their goal of getting the antigunners all stirred up.
