U.S. Investigates LG Semicon For Dodging Duties
(2:25 p.m. EDT, 5/22/98)
By Jack Robertson

The Commerce Department last week was looking into accusations that LG Semicon Co.was trying to circumvent the preliminary DRAM dumping duties by shipping memory chips through Hong Kong and a Korean-based third party. The Commerce Department, which levied 7.61% penalty tariffs against Korea-based LG and 12.64% DRAM duties against Hyundai Electronic Industries Co. in March, was expected to decide on a final dumping duty in July. However, the lastest charge could delay the decision.

LG's attorney said that the company was not aware ofthird-party vendors importing DRAMs, which were obtained illegally from unknown sources. LG is fully cooperating with Commerce and making its own investigation to take actions against the third party importers, he said.
