One would have to accept your conclusion that everything that could be done with tax money is valueless. Do I support everything that is currently done with my tax dollars? I loudly yell NO. But do I want a society in which the haves do not share with the have nots? No. And do you know why? Because I am selfish, but in an altruistic way. In order to effectively "exploit" every citizen of this country we first need to make our citizens exploitable. And the best kind of exploitation (and I am using the definition of exploit as follows- to put to productive use) is the kind where people agree to be put to their best use. But frequently this requires an investment in the human capital, and this, IMO, begins before the cradle. It begins with an investment in the parents, to make them better parents. It begins with assuring healthy babies, so our human capital will be born undamaged. It then progresses to assuring that our fledgling little human hunks of capital will grow up educated and protected from harm- so that they may function at optimal efficiency and not be a drag on society. And all this requires investment- farsighted long term investment planning for the society of the future, when the babies of today, work in the nursing homes of tomorrow and take care of US.
