Hi Robert, Do you know of any article discussing QCOM's cost reduction efforts? Since the handset volume is huge, each penny counts.

Right now in Dallas/Ft. Worth area, consumers pay $199 for the handset when they sign up for the service. I am not sure what their DM(direct Material) cost is but having worked on TDMA-based handsets as well as CDMA base stations, I would guess somewhere around $120-$150. They should be able to get this down to $80-$100(first pass) by integrating components on the digital and RF boards. I have not opened one up yet so I don't even know if they have two separate boards or not. If two boards, then their next generation handset will most likely be done with one board at lower cost.

QCOM's handset is quite bulky (compared to AMPS and GSM handsets) and weighs around 5 oz, so there is plenty of room for improvement as far as cost, size, weight,...

Your thoughts, please

Clint
