Scott, thanks for the http. Good reference!!

Motorola announced their new system about 16 October. I probably saw it in Newpage, but I referred to it here:
techstocks.com.

Iridium will be the first big LEO provider. The table says 1998, but they will be fully operational early 1998 whereas Globalstar won't be until late 1998.

I clipped this little bit out from the interview with the Teledesic guy:

"THE HERRING: Would you work with equipment manufacturers? George Gilder suggests you partner with Motorola, which he thinks should can IRIDIUM."

I have wondered whether Iridium would even fly, but it all seems to be proceeding on schedule and the first launch is due this year I believe. The market seems so big and profitable, that they might as well launch, then put up another system as soon as they can. Which will be the CDMA one competing more effectively with Globalstar.

I thought Odyssey is already going. I haven't followed the smaller ones like Ellipso sorry, as they are opportunistic supplying a very narrow market with limited resources. Globalstar seems to be the best system and now Motorola is going to copy it. However, Iridium will serve a purpose with a limited life cycle.
