(NYSE:BAY - news) today strengthened its long-standing relationship with the University of California, Berkeley through the endowment of a distinguished professorship in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and a grant of a $4.9 million in networking equipment.
The Bay Networks Distinguished Professorship is a permanent endowment to support an EECS professor, demonstrating Bay Networks' commitment to funding the next generation of technology innovators who will keep the information technology industry vital and moving quickly. This endowment represents a new level of commitment to education in the Silicon Valley by a major networking company.
The equipment grant is being given to both the EECS department and the university's Computer Network Services organization. The goal of the grant is to enable EECS and the university to maintain their premier stature in producing graduates and technical advances by deploying the most advanced networking technologies available for departmental and campus-wide communication and research.
As part of the equipment grant, Bay Networks will also provide CNS with unlimited training on Bay Networks products.

Bay Networks maintains collaborative relationships between the company's Architecture Lab and UC Berkeley faculty, and funds graduate student research. Recently, Bay Networks also became a member of UC Berkeley's Industrial Liaison Program, which is designed to encourage close cooperation between the industrial community and the College of Engineering.
This association includes a faster transfer and exchange of the university's research results to member companies, collaborative research focused on problems which interest the industrial community, timely industry access to publications, students, and faculty, and industrial involvement in research and education through grants to support the university's activities.
In addition, CNS has already built its campus backbone using Bay Networks Accelar routing switches, implementing Layer 3 and Gigabit Ethernet to prepare the university for deployment of next-generation applications.
