No, Dee :) Was the truth! And I remember the government raised the price of oil 60% the week before I went to Korea, too.

Koreans traditionally eat what we call "brown rice." It is a single-crop rice, and therefore expensive. At the time, import of rice was forbidden.

A meal in Korea could be had for 300-800 Won (@500 won/USD). About the same as us poor students in Taiwan. But that second bowl of rice was a killer, and I am a "Lao Fan Tong" :)
