Terrence, on what facts exactly are you basing your statement that the Neanderthals were the most social of all men? Details, please.

What exactly are you saying about social animals? That selfishness is somehow inherently wrong or immoral? I believe I am quite selfish when I say I want to live in a society which is not collapsing around me, and I would suspect that X might feel the same way, while I would not want to speak for her.

There is nothing wrong with selfishness, particularly when it does not hurt anyone, and makes the society stronger at the same time. While it is true that mutual needs for companionship, security, reliable sex, and protection of the young are met effectively in the societies of social animals, certainly this is a good example of the positive aspects of "selfishness".
