Terrence, my idea of Man includes the very logical observation that people are born helpless, have very long infancies and childhoods, are most productive during the earlier and middle part of their adulthoods, and sometimes become helpless and dependent again when they are old. Tax and family structures should be sturdy and strong enough to try to protect us to some degree against accidents of birth and fate, and to ensure that the young are healthy enough to survive and prosper and take care of the old.

Did you know that female elephants in a herd adopt motherless babies? Or that the elderly are protected and respected? That they seem to understand the life cycle, and mourn their dead? I heard something the other day which I found very interesting, if it is true--man is the only animal that kills purely for pleasure.

Can we expect less of man than the altruistic behavior exhibited by the higher animals? I hope not!
