Broadcom, Sony tie up on digital TVs
Reuters - May 21, 1998, 9:10 a.m. PT

IRVINE, California--Broadcom will collaborate with Sony on developing
a range of integrated circuits for use in consumer electronics products
for the developing digital TV market.

The integrated circuits, or ICs, will be intended for use in advanced
terminals that receive digital signals for new and current TV sets.
Broadcom also announced plans to develop multimedia chips using digital
interface technology.

"We're very excited about Broadcom's broadband transmission technology
and its ability to offer improved performance at reduced cost," said
Yukio Kubota, deputy president of Sony's Digital Network Solutions
Company.

Along with its collaboration with Sony, Broadcom makes chips that
help bring Internet access to TV screens through existing cable TV
lines. Customers shipping Broadcom products include 3Com and Cisco
Systems.

Shares of the Irvine, California-based maker of advanced digital
transmission products, were up 2 at 55 by mid-morning. Broadcom,
which became a publicly traded company on April 17, has seen its
stock surge to as high as 70 from an offering price of 24.
