The bottom line is Compaq, IBM, and HP have proven that they can close the gap with Dell -- at the expense of earning a profit. Dell's earnings are increasing faster than their sales which are increasing very nicely. When Compaq gets their channel cleared of excess inventory now being sold at zero margin, the price gap will open up again in Dell's favor.
