Skipper, I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. What I meant to say is that I would be willing to pay a lot more tax dollars if the rough edges of society would be tempered by that in a constructive way. If you look at my post, the word WILLING is really the operative one. Of course, there are people begging on the streets now. But I think it pulls our whole society down, and makes us seem callous and cold, like the heart is missing in American life, which from a distance might seem strangely materialistic, fast and not very compassionate.

Paying taxes seems to be part of the social contract in modern life. At least now they do some limited good most of the time, better than when people were just paying protection money to the king. Are you arguing that taxation should end? How would things work?
