To msc123 on the Wave chip IBM and motherboards - I hope your E3 prediction about the IBM Aptiva incorporating Wave is correct. Even though there have been reports of IBM being bureaucratic and dragging its feet (perhaps strategic product announcement decoys?), it would be fitting for them to be Wave's first OEM even if they are not ultimately the largest channel for Wave. Remember that IBM's December '97 announcement gave Wave immeasurable credibility and momentum in going forward with other OEMs. If IBM were left behind and lost credit for introducing the WaveMeter then it would not only be ironic but mystifying when one considers the potential impact that this new technology could have on Electronic Software Distribution. Klingerg's post #2313 refers to Gerstner's remarks about wanting IBM to be at the forefront of online distribution of software, video etc. Now I hope they are ready to take the next step with Wave at E3.

Getting on now to the WaveMeter and motherboards. I don't know to what extent IBM manufactures its own or subs them out, but I understand that the WaveMeter will probably be embedded on input/output circuit chips (I/Os) manufactured by semiconductor companies like National Semiconductor and Standard Microsystems, both of which produce 80% of the world's supply for PC motherboards.

Yahoo Post #1692 mentions the need for Wave to have an Intel commitment for their motherboard implementation. This would certainly be great but many people may not realize that Intel produces a lot more micro-processors than it does motherboards (about 7 million). Don't get me wrong though, 7 million WaveMeters through one OEM would be fantastic; it's just not the one and only potential source for PCs.

I could speculate for the remainder of the holiday weekend but there are just too many variables and possibilities. It's 3 PM Sunday and I really should stop being restless and try a brewski as Klingerg recommends.

Back on Tuesday,
