That's a tough one. Proving it is the critical point, and nobody wants to see children suffer at the hands of abusive parents. But the state has been known to be heavy handed here, acting on hearsay, and causing severe heartache to innocent parents and children alike. It seems that certain things, like child abuse, come under a different set of rules which transcend our constitutional rights. (Parenthetically, IRS rights to your money and forfeiture rights to your property also transcend the constitution, but that's another issue.)

I am reminded of one child who was removed from his parents home on the basis of hearsay of abuse. He was dragged screaming from his bed and disappeared into the secret hiding places of the state (all done for the protection of the child, of course.) It took months and all the family's money for attorneys to get their child back. Talk about psychological trauma!

To paraphrase Vergil, I fear the state even when bearing gifts of protection.

But I agree we have to protect children as well. I don't pretend to know where the proper middle of the road approach lies. But I'm scared to death of bureaucrats with police powers.
