Jack, since you reassured me as a doctor that there are no serious side effects from Norplant, I'm not sure I would have a problem with that being a condition of welfare payments. However, with welfare ending, that would not really solve the problem. Certainly, it would be quite radical to force anyone who lives below the poverty level to be sterilized, don't you think? Also, many parents THINK they can take care of a child, but encounter difficulties later and end up in reduced circumstances. Is it reasonable to take their children away because they suddenly cannot feed them, if they are otherwise adequate parents?
As I recall, we both believe in a minimum wage which will provide the basic necessities, with both food and shelter affordable. That is no longer possible in many parts of America. If a parent working fulltime cannot afford this level of sustenance, something doesn't seem very fair to me.
We can both see what a slippery slope this all is, just by even trying to discuss it! |
