Microsoft's monopoly status has nothing to do with the government and it has nothing to do with patents. Microsoft has a monopoly because they are the sole supplier of a proprietary PC component: the Windows OS. The PC is the dominant business appliance despite Microsoft, not because of them. The PC is a completely open architecture which has worldwide support from tens of thousands of hardware and software developers. Microsoft is trying to close the door completely by making Internet application development as proprietary as possible. Microsoft invented nothing; they innovated nothing; they steal ideas and implement them extremely badly in a proprietary manner. Microsoft does not understand modern software architecture and never will. They will fall to Java related technologies as a result of complete technical incompetence unless they can co-opt the Internet and the browser. They must prevent competition because they are incapable of competing on a level playing field.
