<<In the same way Christine chooses to send her child to a school for gifted, we have chosen this.>>

Penni, now I bet I am going to get HATE MAIL!! The school my daughter is going to attend next year is PUBLIC, and some of the children who go there are on public assistance, as I understand it. And only 17% of the children are white, as well. Didn't you take your boys out of public schools because their needs as gifted children could not be met?

I am pretty conflicted about this, obviously. Metal detectors and gangs really scare me, as does the general quality of teachers in regular public high schools. If much of our public education system has gotten so bad that we are at risk of not even producing another generation of leaders, isn't it patriotic to try and help one's children any way that you can?

What does anyone owe a society in terms of sacrificing their children because there are huge social problems? I think this is the same question over which most parents who have choices agonize. I don't really know the answer, and my instinct is to protect and nurture my child. They really only get once chance; I cannot wait for the society to improve because it will be too late for my child.
