My my!!! What a love fest we are having tonight, Terrence. Yes, olive oil (not palm oil) is a very good oil. All oils should be cold pressed, purchased in very small quantities, and refrigerated to prevent rancidity. I agree with you about butter, in very small quantities. Margarine causes 30,000 deaths in the United States every year. There is a new margarine, Smart Balance, which has no transfatty acids, however, and I guess I would consider it healthier than butter, now that there is a real choice. There is really nothing very dangerous about canola oil, either.
Have you heard about grapeseed oil? I toured a winery where a very, very old man was talking about its health benefits. He said it would even unwilt lettuce, and that he used it exclusively, and that it was more beneficial to humans than any other oil. It is very, very expensive, comparatively speaking, and can only be found a health food stores here. I want to find out more about it.
I did read "Sugar Blues". I used to eat no refined sugars at all, and now eat them sparingly. I think that oils have more of an impact on health than sugars do. During the original health food phase in the sixties, seventies and eighties, people piled on the fats, including plenty of gooey, melted cheese, but religiously avoided even the suggestion of sugar. I think with more knowledge, things are more balanced now. |
