Rudedog, no doubt Compaq has been the leader in market share for a while. The latest question has been about its profits. The advantage of Dell is not a rumor for the recent past, at least from their latest profit records and the reports we have seen so far. "IF"Compaq has improved in the latest month, that is good. However even in your quoted report it is not clear whether the slight increase in the unit sales in Compaq's Pentium II machines resulted in increased profit or even revenue. In fact also from the same report you quoted, it says: "April is the cruelest month for PC retailers, too. Despite a 6.2 percent increase in retail unit PC sales last month compared with April 1997, revenue fell 12.3 percent, according to the latest monthly sales data from PC Data." " ... "It was a dead month," said Stephen Baker, senior hardware analyst for PC Data. "It was worse for some people than it was for others, but generally speaking it was lousy."
I am curious how Dell is doing for the same period with their latest pentium II machines (which sell at $100-200 more than Compaq) and over all.
To be clear, rudedog, I don't own any shares of Dell stock but many shares in Compaq. I am more interested in learning how Compaq can improve its profits like Dell has been making. If this has happened in the latest period I will be very happy for that, but we yet to see the evidence for that. |
