Tom - Re: "One of my coworkers was one of those folks that bought the latest and greatest from Dell (400 MHz with a BX motherboard) "

Proof positive that people are willing to buy the fastest PCs - with Intel's CPU inside.

I assume your coworker is satisfied - since Dell will return his money if he isn't.

How many coworkers are buying PCs like yours with a "PR" rating?

Judging by NSM's results - NOT MANY!

Re: " However, I am having trouble finding software that I can't
run on my PR233MX system (with AGP and DVD) "

It isn't the software - it's the speed at which the software runs.

Call Parametric Technology and order up a copy of ProEngineer - Install Windows NT on your "PR" system and your coworker's system, install ProEngineer and construct a few solid models with full color rendering.

Get back to me when you have compared your two systems and the speed at which ProEngineer runs on them.

This is an extreme example - but creative people buy the best available PCs to help them be more creative. Performing many concurrent applications (standard) is another way to benefit from a faster PC - doing database searches while compiling programs or downloading technical manuals from Web Sites is another (one of many) example of being more productive by use of faster PCs.

If you are not a creative individual, I'm sure your "PR" machine will suit you just fine for the next 10 or 20 years.

To assume that everyone operates at your level is to greatly underestimate the capabilities of many individuals.
