Company Press Release
Motorola to Expand its Family of ADSL Products with New CopperGold Lite Solutions

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1998--

New Remote Access Solutions Will Enable Production of Modems Capable of Supporting Both V.90 and ADSL Access Technologies; Will Allow End Users to Achieve the Highest Data Rates Available, Protecting their Technology Investments

PC OEMs will soon be able to offer end users systems equipped with a CopperGold-based upgradeable modem that supports both V.90 and ADSL access technologies, as Motorola Tuesday announced that it will develop new hybrid modem products -- the CopperGold Lite Solutions.

Designed to enable high-speed Internet access and other data services, the new members of Motorola's CopperGold Family of ADSL Solutions will be capable of delivering data rates from 128 kbps to 1.5 Mbps over ordinary phone lines.

Because they will support legacy analog modem operations and will also be upgradeable to future ADSL standards, such as G.Lite and Universal ADSL, as they are finalized, the CopperGold Lite Solutions will allow end users to take advantage of the highest data rate available to them at all times, which helps to protect their technology investments.

For example, a service provider may offer V.90 access today but have plans to introduce ADSL by the end of the year. With the CopperGold Lite Solutions, end users in that area will be able to access the Internet at analog rates today and at the higher digital rates as ADSL is made available to them -- without having to purchase a new modem.

For owners of portable computing equipment, the CopperGold Lite Solutions mean they'll be able to utilize the high rates of the ADSL service they have at home, and still be able to access the Internet via the analog technologies available in their hotel rooms.

''With the increasing popularity of the Internet for business and home applications, high-speed access is a driving force in the PC marketplace,'' said Bertrand Cambou, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Networking and Computing Systems Group (NCSG). ''At Motorola we are leveraging our ADSL and analog modem expertise to help PC OEMs meet end users' needs for faster access.''

Motorola is an active participant in the various standards bodies -- ANSI, the ITU and the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG) -- that are working to accelerate the availability of affordable, high-speed Internet access technology to the consumer market by developing optimized versions of ADSL technology.

Motorola will continue its research and development work in this area to ensure its CopperGold Lite Solutions are capable of providing acceptable bandwidth as well as quality of service for the customer. The CopperGold Lite Solutions will be designed to be interoperable with Motorola's full-rate CopperGold ADSL Solution, which is designed to comply with ANSI's T1.413 standard.

''Today's announcement clearly illustrates Motorola's commitment to developing a broad portfolio of remote system solutions that enable widespread, low-cost megabit access to the Internet and other multimedia applications,'' said Pete Bingham, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola's Communications, Transmission and Access Systems (CTAS) Division.

''Our CopperGold Lite Solutions will protect end users' technology investments with a seamless, easy-to-use migration path from today's V.90 specification to tomorrow's ADSL technology.''

In addition to the new CopperGold Lite Solutions, Motorola's CopperGold Family includes the highly-integrated transceiver (MC145650), the performance-optimizing and power-saving line driver (MC03AX1456), and a wide array of complementary components tailored for specific applications such as Ethernet transceivers (MC68160), ATM Cell Processors (MC92501), and many host control options (MPC860, MPC860SAR, MPC850, MCX683xx, MC68EN302/360).

Motorola's CopperGold ADSL Solution is fully supported with evaluation boards, APIs, a system analyzer and Motorola's world-class applications support. Motorola is currently sampling the full rate CopperGold Solution to customers, and expects to be in full production in Q3 98.
