MMCN competes with a very small portion of PMCS's business. There are three basic layers in the ATM architecture. The physical layer, the ATM layer and the switching layer. PMCS is dominant in the phy layer, a leader in the ATM layer and is now competing in the switch layer with its acquisition of IgT. If anything, MMCN now has to look over their shoulder and watch for PMCS more often.

BTW, it is important to realize that although ATM is experiencing a nice renaissance, and is a very strong contributor to PMCS growth, it still only represents 40% of their business. PMCS is much more diversified than people realize - this allows them to win no matter which networking technology is 'hot'.
