Ascend Communications Recognized for Outstanding Achievements in Internet Telephony by Analyst Firm Frost & Sullivan
Frost & Sullivan Honors Ascend With Market Engineering Award
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1998--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND - news), a leading provider of wide area network (WAN) solutions for network service providers, today announced that the company has been recognized with the Frost & Sullivan Market Engineering Award. Bestowed on just four companies that Frost & Sullivan believes have established themselves as market leaders, the Market Engineering Award recognizes Ascend's achievements in the emerging Voice over IP (VoIP) arena.
''This award validates our comprehensive voice over IP strategy and represents the tremendous market acceptance of our approach and solutions in this rapidly evolving space,'' said Roger Boyce, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Access for Ascend Communications. ''Voice over IP represents a significant market opportunity for us and our network service provider customers, and we are committed to continuing to deliver solutions that leverage this opportunity.''
Ascend recently introduced its MultiVoice strategy, a comprehensive architecture for delivering voice and fax calls over IP, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Frame Relay networks. In the first phase of the three-phase MultiVoice strategy, Ascend is shipping solutions that will allow service providers and enterprise customers to route voice and fax calls over an IP infrastructure. Service providers, can for the first time, deploy packetized voice using Ascend Access Switching, Frame Relay and Switched IP solutions to create true ''toll-quality'' voice networks. In phase two of MultiVoice, Ascend will deliver solutions for voice over ATM and in phase three, Ascend will unveil interoperability of MultiVoice over IP, Frame Relay and ATM, as well as the ability to integrate MultiVoice into SS7 carrier signaling networks.
Frost & Sullivan bestows the Market Engineering Awards each year on leaders in the IP telephony industry that made a positive contribution to the marketplace.
''Ascend is making remarkable contributions to the voice over IP market and we applaud them,'' said Francois Eric de Repentigny, telecommunications analyst for Frost & Sullivan. ''Ascend's MultiVoice product line is probably the most complete and versatile suite of voice over IP products for large service providers. Solutions like MultiVoice are bringing toll-quality voice over IP into the very near future.''
The Market Engineering Awards are based on Frost & Sullivan's research and consulting work in 1997 and 1998. Winners are selected from an in-depth analysis of the market competitors and interviews with those companies that make up the industry. The Frost & Sullivan research management team has reviewed these awards and the criteria used to select the winners to ensure that the competition and award system are as fair as possible given the subjective nature of market analysis and competitive assessment.
