LG Electronics Inc. recently shipped to the United States a cutting-edge DVD player that can play DVD discs and Digital Video Express (Divx), a new DVD format incorporating the pay-per-view concept.

The U.S. buyer, Circuit City, plans to begin selling Divx players in the U.S. market at the end of this month. The products will be sold under the brand name Zenith, LG's American subsidiary, an LG spokesman said.

Circuit City, a consumer electronics and general merchandise store, has developed Divx discs that are much cheaper than DVD discs and feature a two-day viewing period that can be extended with additional payments.

Divx players play all standard DVD discs, but the lower-cost Divx rental discs cannot be played on standard DVD players.

Other international companies, such as Thomson and Matsushita, are developing Divx players, but they will not appear on the market till the end of the year, the spokesman said.

He added that Divx players will assume 15 percent of this year's U.S. DVD player market, which is estimated at 2 million units.
