ATLANTA, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- National availability of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) service was significantly advanced by the May 26 BellSouth filing of an interstate tariff to permit interconnection to its ATM network. ATM is a switching technology capable of integrating voice, data, and video on a single broadband network.
"ATM is a cell-based technology that's ideal for transporting a wide variety of traffic types and access methods," said Scott Schaefer, president of BellSouth Interconnection Services. "Interest in ATM services and use of ATM as a backbone transport technology is exploding as users demand seamless integration of voice, data and video for access to multimedia applications."
While this will be BellSouth's first interstate ATM tariff filing, BellSouth has offered ATM service since 1995 when the service was introduced in North Carolina under a trial tariff. Since that time, ATM has been available throughout BellSouth on a "customer demand" basis, said Schaefer. State tariffs for BellSouth ATM service are expected to be filed soon after the Federal Communications Commission approves the interstate tariffs for BellSouth Exchange Access ATM service.
Initially, BellSouth Exchange Access ATM service will enable BellSouth Interconnection Services' carrier customers to establish Permanent Virtual Connections (PVCs) in quality of service categories suitable for different traffic types, including Constant Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate Real Time, Variable Bit Rate-Not Real Time and Unspecified Bit Rate. Port speeds include DS1 (1.536 mbps), DS3 (44.736 mbps), OC 3 (149.76 mbps) and OC 12 (599.040 mbps). >>>> |
