Phil - Re:"Could you please explain the KLAMETH..."

Klamath is the code name to Intel's newest (as yet unreleased) Pentium Pro.

With the Klamath chip, Intel added the MMX instruction set to the original Pentium Pro. These MMX instructions are features that permit high performance multimedia applications by allowing signal processing algorithms to be implimented in MMX hardware instructions, as opposed to slower implimentations requiring software algorithms.

Further, Intel has decided to offer this version of the Pentium Pro in a package that does not include the large Level 2 SRAM cache. The original Pentium Pro has two chips in the IC package - the Pentium Pro and an SRAM chip (either 256KBytes or 512K Bytes), with direct address/data paths to the Pentium Pro processor without use of the normal external Pentium Pro bus to main memory.

The Klamath should offer a variation of the direct L2 data/sddress bus, but these pins will be brought out externally. In this manner, PC manufacturers will be able to add their own external L2 SRAM cache.

Another feature that I expected in the Klamath, but do not have confirmnation on, is a doubling of the Pentium Pros internal Level 1 SRAM cache from 16 KBytes to 32 KBytes.

Additional circuit optimizations should also be incorporated, hopefully allowing the Klamath to operate at higher operating frequencies - up to 266 MHz (I hope!).

Re:".Do you think that the K6 will strike some fear into intel investors..."

This has already happened. AMD's release of K6 samples is a major milestone for AMD. Anything that threatens Intel's hegemony in the CPU arena will cause nervous investors/traders to head for the exit doors.

If one has confidence in Intel's technology and management, one would presume that Intel can succeed despite competition from AMD and/or Cyrix. They have done it before.
