Honduras to seize smuggled Viagra impotence pills

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, May 25 (Reuters) - Honduran health authorities said on Monday they would confiscate Viagra impotence pills, selling like hot cakes in the Central American country, because their distribution had not been authorized. "Honduras has not authorized the import of this medicine. We will confiscate all the product we find in the market," Deputy Health Minister Jose Matheu said.

The government's decision followed reports that Viagra was selling heavily in San Pedro Sula, the country's second-biggest city, where some pharmacies that had obtained samples already had 200 or more clients on waiting lists.

Newspapers said each Viagra pill was being sold in San Pedro Sula, 100 miles (165 km) north of the capital, Tegucigalpa, for up to $19, almost double the U.S. price.

Officials said the pills must have been imported by private individuals.

The prescription drug, made by New York-based Pfizer Inc. <PFE.N>, has become a blockbuster in the United States, where thousands of men suffering from impotence after illnesses such as prostrate cancer say it has improved their sex lives.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Friday six men had died while taking Viagra but it was unknown if there was any connection between their deaths and the medication.

In the macho societies of Central America and Mexico, the impotence pill has generated mixed reactions. Mexico, for example, decided to block the sale of the drug for now and warned men it was not a magical aphrodisiac.
