Intel Introduces Industry's Most Advanced Fast Ethernet
Networking Controller

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1998--Extending its leadership in fast ethernet networking silicon, Intel today announced the industry's first multiplatform, single-chip fast ethernet
controller, the 82559.

As a common solution for multiple Intel(R) Architecture platforms - servers, desktops, Network PCs and mobile clients - the 82559 eliminates the need for IT managers to test, support and manage different networking solutions for each of those platforms. The 82559 also integrates new advanced management capabilities yet it is 75 percent smaller, requires 80 percent less power and provides lower CPU utilization than any other fast ethernet controller in the industry.

"Better silicon means better solutions, and no one understands silicon better than Intel," said Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Networking Products Division. "We have consistently led the industry in creating new and innovative networking silicon solutions. We created the first single-chip solution a year ahead of the competition, we announced the industry's lighest-performance gigabit silicon a couple of weeks ago, and now we're resetting the standard of excellence in fast ethernet
silicon."

The 82559 measures 15 mm by 15 mm in a BGA (Ball Grid Array) package that is smaller than a dime and one-fourth the size of competing chips. This reduction in size combined with the integration of surrounding circuitry will help PC OEMs deliver highly manageable fast ethernet connectivity in smaller, more reliable and lower cost LAN on Motherboard (LOM) designs. In addition, the 82559 has a low power sleep mode that uses less than 5 milliamps of power at 3.3 volts. The smaller size and lower power consumption of the 82559 make it the first viable solution for mobile products such as laptops and hand-held PCs.

"We have been anxiously awaiting a solution like the 82559 that will enable us to deliver the most manageable fast ethernet LAN connectivity across multiple platforms including mobile products," said Mr. K. Inoue, general manager of Desktop Products Division, Fujitsu Limited.

An added benefit of having a single solution across multiple platforms is that it enables IT administrators to deploy a common base driver set across desktop, server, Net PC and mobile systems. The 82559 is
software compatible with the current generation Intel 82558 and prior generation 82557-based adapters and LOM designs. This driver compatibility across multiple platforms and over three generations
decreases the complexity of managing a network and helps to lower support costs.

Alert on LAN(1), a new technology that alerts network administrators when a system has a problem, even if it is powered down or the operating system is unavailable, has also been integrated into this single-chip solution.

The 82559 will be available in volume to major PC, server, Net PC and mobile platform manufacturers beginning in the fourth quarter of this year. Intel will also begin using the new chips in its network interface cards (NICs) starting in early 1999.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
