Cranking the crank is not genius. It's just learning a machine. That's the way coding is. Takes no more ability to do it than writing an expository essay. The difficulty lies in saying something of value. You don't even get that chance in coding because you're paid to model, not to invent.

Gates cranked the code crank fairly well. That's not genius. At one time I thought Wozniak's writing of the Apple II OS source and compiler was pretty clever. Then I learned assembler and C. Woz's accomplishment didn't seem so great then. So what happened to Woz? He got buried in a pile of money. He would have been better off less successful.

Gates is the same. He hasn't done anything remarkable since his Excel coding ideas found expression in 1991. He's only known because he happened to end up in the position he has. What does Gates do well? Pick upper level managers. What does he do not-so-well? He has alienated just about everyone. Aren't CEO's supposed to be good at inter-personal relations, humility, and self-abnegation? On these most important criteria, Gates is a failure. So much for genius. But to Americans money = genius because it takes Gates' "genius" to make money in a country that conducts a war on wealth.

At least Goldman can write well.
