Not sure we're talking about the same show.
Yesterday, Chris Matthew's late afternoon ad for the 8 p.m. Hardball show, and the show itself, were inflammatory and damaging re: B. Schwartz and an embarrassment to CNBC/GE.
Last night's show was predicated on false/misleading information (request a transcript). There've been numerous complaints about other Hardball 'episodes' so it would appear that dis/mis info tactics, and false, malicious, inflammatory statements are integral to CM's MO:
According to Webster's, libel = "1. any false and malicious written or printed statement..tending to expose a person to public ridicule, hatred or contempt or to injure a person's reputation in any way."
Matthew's show last night fits above definition.
According to Synopsis of Law of Libel (Scripps-Howard Newspapers), "The law of defamation is divided into two branches: slander, which consists of oral communication, and libel, which consists of printed or broadcast communication. A short definition of libel may be given as follows:
"A libel is a false statement printed or broadcast about a person which tends to bring that person into public hatred, contempt or ridicule or to injure him in his business or occupation."
Again, CM's show last night fits.
Time for something to be done. This rabid, misinformation fest in the media about Loral/B. Schwartz has gone way too far; even some posters on this board appear unaware of what's fact and what's just plain sloppy/inaccurate reporting & media hysteria. Posters on AOL boards recommend contacting GE's chairman about the factual inaccuracies and inflammatory nature of CM's Hardball last night;
and alerting Loral to pervasive inaccuracies in the media about this whole situation.
Bottom line is that anyone who bothered to sidestep the hype and learn/report the facts would see Loral/Schwartz did nothing wrong.
Why then the hysteria? G.W.
