MAPICS and IBS Announce Planned Integrated Java Development

Companies Intend to Contract to Jointly Develop Platform-Independent Applications Based on IBM SanFrancisco Application Business Components for Java

ATLANTA and STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 1998-- MAPICS, Inc. (Nasdaq:MAPX - news), a leading provider of enterprise-wide planning solutions to manufacturers, and International Business Systems (IBS), a leading international supplier of distribution and supply chain software, today announced the intent to form a cooperative development effort based on IBM SanFrancisco(TM) Java(TM) business process components. Through the partnership, MAPICS and IBS intend to develop hardware platform-independent, component-based business software using IBM SanFrancisco to gain market share in the growing supply chain software marketplace.

Under the terms of the proposed agreement, IBS and MAPICS would focus on the application areas where they have specific strengths and share information to complete a fully integrated system. The companies intend to market and distribute this future suite of applications as different entities and under separate brands, IBS and MAPICS.

MAPICS will focus on delivering manufacturing software to the partnership. ''Our vision is focused on delivering more competitive value to manufacturers worldwide by combining the industry leading manufacturing expertise encompassed in MAPICS' products with a common industry standard technology like Java,'' commented Dick Cook, MAPICS' president and CEO, on the decision to develop using SanFrancisco. ''This co-development effort should allow both IBS and MAPICS to strengthen our positions in our respective markets by delivering full-function, platform-independent manufacturing and distribution products worldwide.''

IBS will initially focus on delivering distribution and logistics software to the product development partnership. ''IBS has been a major external supplier of expertise to IBM SanFrancisco over the past three years,'' says Staffan Ahlberg, CEO of IBS. ''We are very pleased to see that visionary companies are actively developing component-based software using Java. We expect to see that this development initiative between IBS and MAPICS will start to attract many other software vendors to enter into development cooperation with us based on IBM SanFrancisco.''

IBM SanFrancisco provides an industry standard set of Java business components and application frameworks, including software tools that allow application developers to focus on constructing their own business software, decreasing time to market and removing the requirement of developing a proprietary framework.

''IBM is pleased to have companies like MAPICS and IBS, who have expertise in developing enterprise software for business management, commit to future application development using SanFrancisco,'' said Steve Ladwig, general manager, IBM Small & Medium Business. ''This partnership will be significant due to both companies' well-established presence in the market and their ability to offer interoperable, best-of-breed applications to customers that take advantage of their respective strengths.''
