Intermagnetics General Designs, Installs Innovative Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System at U.S. Air Base

Environmentally Friendly, State-of-the-Art System Cuts Costs, Improves Performance

May 27, 1998 09:24 AM

LATHAM, N.Y., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Intermagnetics General Corporation , today announced that its Magnet Business Group has delivered
and installed a state-of-the-art superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system at a U.S. Air Force facility in Florida. The
IPQ-750(TM) system -- now located at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Base Technology Branch at Tyndall Air Force Base -- includes
several technological advancements that make it ideal for both industrial end-users and electric utilities. The system protects critically
important electric equipment against voltage sags and/or power interruptions as well as providing around-the-clock conditioned quality power to
these loads.

"With the installation of the SMES system, the IGC-Magnet Business Group has succeeded in leap-frogging the competition," said Carl H.
Rosner, chairman and CEO of Intermagnetics. "The unique design incorporates such technological innovations as high temperature
superconducting (HTS) power leads; low- maintenance, cryocooler-based refrigeration, and a compact stand-alone Mobile/Relocatable Shelter,
which represents a containerized housing configuration for the equipment."

"Intermagnetics and the IGC-Magnet Business Group are poised to capitalize on the needs of an emerging commercial market in electric power
quality products for both the industrial end-user and the electric utility industry," Rosner said. "This type of product should be attractive to an
industry that is entering a deregulation environment, while Intermagnetics expects to build an industry-leading position based upon our newest
product, the IPQ-750(TM) system."

An SMES system stores electricity in a superconducting magnet for release when needed to provide temporary high-quality electric current to
machinery or equipment sensitive to short-term electrical disturbance. The IPQ-750(TM) SMES system offers an environmentally friendly
alternative to batteries, with the most important advantage of a superconducting magnet being its ability to undergo repeated charge/discharge
cycles without degradation in performance.

Intermagnetics is the largest integrated developer and manufacturer in the United States, of superconducting LTS and HTS magnets, wire and
cable as well as associated low-temperature refrigeration equipment, and radio-frequency (RF) coils, the combination of which is essential to
successful application of superconductivity such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The Company is dedicated to the development and
commercialization of applied superconductivity and refrigeration systems. The Company also supplies permanent magnet systems, materials
separation equipment and FRIGC(R) refrigerants as replacements for ozone-depleting refrigerants.

Safe Harbor Statement: This press release contains "forward-looking statements" that involve various important assumptions, risks,
uncertainties and other factors. These include, without limitation, the assumptions, risks, and uncertainties set forth in the Company's 1997
Form 10-K as well as the Company's ability to win market acceptance for new technology, such as SMES, in an industry not traditionally
receptive to technical innovation and to build and price SMES competitively with other alternatives, as well as appropriate pricing and energy
costs.
