CNNfn: Gateway breaks IE ranks
Computer maker will bypass Win 98 desktop, offer Netscape browser

May 27, 1998: 6:44 a.m. ET

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Gateway Inc. said Wednesday it will
be the first major computer maker to bypass Microsoft Corp.'s
Windows 98 opening screen.

The company also said it will let its customers choose
whether they want Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser
or Netscape Communications Corp.'s Navigator included on
their computers.

Apparently Gateway is making the move with Microsoft's
blessing. Industry insiders say Microsoft is trying to placate
federal regulators who claim the company imposes rigid
requirements on PC makers to protect its operating system
monopoly.

Microsoft officials were not available for immediate comment.

The opening screen and browser issues are key elements of
the government's antitrust suit against the software titan.
Under current conditions, the government argues, computer
makers cannot tailor their systems to highlight their own
product brands or brands that compete with Microsoft.
The government also maintains Microsoft unlawfully forbids
PC makers from removing Internet Explorer and distributing
browsers from competing companies on their systems.

Microsoft (MSFT) shares closed Tuesday at 83-5/8, down
1-15/16. Shares of Gateway (GTW) closed at 44-1/2, down
1-1/4.
