Re your, " 'Intel Inside' gives most of us the warm fuzzies. Intel has created an illusion that we are safe in the computing world because we own an Intel inside. But it is mostly illusion."

IMHO, I think you underestimate the power of a brand. And Intel has created a very powerful brand, which is just a shorthand way for consumers to avoid doing their own in-depth research on a product. Many people on this thread have reported overhearing potential PC buyers wanting reassurance that their new computer has a Pentium.

Now Intel got some of that brand recognition in an odd way thru the pentium flap, but it turned out that they got millions in free publicity, and when they stood behind their product without qualification, people were convinced that their product was the best.

In marketing perception is reality. So please do not call Intel's strength an illusion. You are selling the company short and you will fail to be able to take advantage of one of the biggest success stories of the decade.
