I've finally seen the Magicom (!) in action. He brought in the unit and set it up today. I got to test the pen first hand and scan in a high resolution drawing. The unit IS real and Magicom is clearly NOT an outright fraud. That said, however, the technology is not amazing. Rather it appears to be a solidly engineered unit with some practical applicability at the right price. The screen has some limitations and I was a bit concerned not to see more pen-based software but overall it was an impressive unit.

The unit looks stylish and professional. It is black in color with a high quality handset. A prominent feature is a front-loading scanner. It worked very well and quickly scanned in a high resolution image on standard size paper. The unit's size is large but not overly bulky. I could accomodate it on my desk relatively easily. Generally the unit is fairly long and wide but not overly tall. The screen is small, set off to the right, and has a greenish appearance.

The screen flickers alot when coming up but looks fairly good once it is warmed up. There is no obvious "clear screen" button which gets annoying. He turned the unit on and off to clear the screen. My initial report based on second-hand information was inaccurate. The unit does not have any built in Microsoft button-based software and it does not do handwriting recognition. Also, the screen does have the greenish hue seen in some of the photographs. It is very readable but the visual aesthetics are not overwhelming; I wasn't blown away by the contrast or brightness but...

The most notable feature of the screen was its outstanding resolution. We scanned a full page drawing with alot of fine print on it. The screen accurately reproduced all the detail which was cool considering its small size. I've never seen anything quite like that. I was able to view it from any angle and it looked OK in both flourescent light and darkness. After scanning an image it is very easy to annotate it with the pen. The pen works extremely, even remarkably, well provided you hold it fairly near its base. I was able to sign my name easily and write very small print. The only problem I encountered was if I held the pen high and wrote very quickly. That caused some lines to drop out.

I haven't seen any of the connectivity features yet although he assured me that they work reliably. Having seen the actual unit in action now, I believe he is a VERY credible source. He indicated that he had no problem connecting two units and doing simultaneous drawing and voice over a single phone line. He showed me how he would annotate an engineering drawing and I saw how that application could be very compelling ; the high screen resolution and relatively small unit footprint are a big plus. I believe the screen is 6" by 4" and he indicated resolution is 200 x 200 per square inch. That's a resolution of 1200 by 800 overall which is comparable to a full size laptop screen. Having seen a full page with fine detail reproduced very accurately on the screen I have no reason to question that resolution.

So overall so far the unit is cool. He's got it for another few days and will be showing me some of the connectivity features; time permitting. I hope to take some photos tomorrow although the prominent features, the high screen resolution and quality of the pen tracking, won't be evident in digital photos.
