SINGAPORE--Asia Pacific's personal computer factory shipments fell 4 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, research firm International Data Corporation said today.

For 1998, IDC projected a 5 percent growth for shipments in the region, which excludes Japan. In 1997, PC shipments rose 16.5 percent in the region, IDC said.

Dane Anderson, IDC's PC research manager, told Reuters he expected a pickup in the region in the second half.

In the first quarter, revenues fell 29 percent.

That drop is due to the popularity of low-cost PCs priced in the $1,000 range, price sensitivity due to the region's economic crisis, and increasing market share taken by India and China where systems were priced lower than the more developed markets.

"The worst market conditions remained in Southeast Asia and Korea. Indonesia, Thailand, and Korea generated the steepest shipment declines from the previous year with decreases of 80 percent, 50 percent, and 39 percent respectively,'' IDC said.

China supported the region's growth, IDC said. PC shipments in China increased 27 percent from a year ago, but that was the lowest growth since the fourth quarter of 1996.

India produced the best annual growth with a 31 percent rise in shipments. A strong 15 percent expansion in Australia bolstered shipments as well.
