Hi Techie,
Taskbar in the upper right corner. Hmm, I haven't run Win 3.1 in so long I don't remember. Was that on the program manager? So are you saying that a right click on the icon in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen for PCQ does nothing? That's no good. Works for me in Win NT. Try playing with the things I said about the taskbar in the other message when you aren't in bad shape just to get a look at them. Maybe leave the Task Manager window open so you can get to it if you get in trouble - although come to think of it, the Task Manager appears to be a memory hog, at least in NT.
I never liked bad noises related to hard disks, not at any time. Is it a click sound like the heads retracting and seating? Or is it more like a screachy head crash. If the latter, you might want to have a real good backup. Or maybe a new disk. Disks shouldn't make bad noises. Don't know why the salesperson said shutting down is hard on the disk. I don't believe that. That was a Gateway salesperson? I have a Gateway P5-133.
PCQ worked fine all day for me too. In fact the net in general seemed quite good today. I didn't find the Comtex news to be sufficiently better than wsj and yahoo but that's just my opinion.
I got my memory from a mail order house. insight.com is their web site. They are pretty good; I've bought lots of stuff from them. Get the insight memory, not the Kingston or PNY. The others are more expensive and no better, IMO. Call Gateway if you need to see what specs you need like EDO perhaps and what speed. You will probably get the 60NS 72 pin SIMM EDO. The web page doesn't list EDO but they have it and it was the same price when I got it. You will need to buy SIMMs in pairs so figure out how much you want to add and divide by 2 eg 2 8MB's to add 16MB. I bought 2 16MB SIMMs for $99 each when they listed for $109 on the web page so they may be cheaper than you see. But then memory prices were tanking then so I got lucky.
BTW, don't buy from Gateway as they will charge way more. When I called to check specs, the guy tried to scare me into buying from them and warned about warranty or something - hogwash. Also, you need to open your machine first to make sure you have the open slots to add more memory. Once Gateway sent a new machine to where I was working and all the memory slots were filled so there was no room for expansion without replacing smaller SIMMs with larger SIMMs.
