Jeff, my wife and I met you and others at the meeting. I was wearing the jeans jacket with the indian head. My short posts earlier are a result of not knowing how to work this SI as a participant. Here are my notes of the meeting:
Gruder-good speaker, lousy reader. They have an excellent staff that work in teams. They have staff augmentation and stock incentive programs where the employees are stockholders and it is highly unlikely that EDS will steal their employees. They appear to have Year 2000 technology cheaper and better than their competition. It also appears that at a very conservative level that the Year 2000 problem will last until at least 2005 and as much as 2014. There are extreme cases of scientists moving to the desert and storing oil and generators because they really fel that the Year 2000 will be a terrible problem. Gruber doesn't think that it will be quite that bad, but he and the Congressman spoke of the denial by the government and business. This was made synonmous to the savings and loan crisis when it first developed-nobody did anything until the 11th hour when it was a real crisis.
Forty percent of Alyd's business will come outside the U.S. The situation in India, which has had a virtual lock on the year 2000 problem, creates a lot of uneasiness and benefits Alyd. The year 2000problem is of much greater magnitude than the Euro conversion of currency.
Most of Alyd's business comes from stepping in as a troubleshooter if the other company fails. In some cases the companies have been EDS and IBM. EDS faces a number of lawsuits because they installed the outdated equipment. The savings and loan crisis started in the mid 80's but no one woke up until much later.
I asked the First Union question and got the sheepish answer with inuendos. Alyd's acquisition policy could put it on the map.
