Not so fast. The press release on the News Only thread says "PacketStar" is a layer 3/4 IP WAN switch. This is clearly not a product for the deep core of carrier networks. It therefore does NOT compete with Ascend's ATM switches, but quite possibly it does with Cisco's routers. It must be used at the edge (ingress & egress) of the carrier network, and from what I can tell, it will feed ATM or POS switches with queued and prioritized data.

Also, this appears to be a new product/technology as I'm not aware of any "layer 4" switches for the WAN. Certainly they're not in widespread use today. It remains to be seen how effective this device can or will be. Without having seen any technical details, I certainly have a lot of questions on how it works. Can anyone fill us in?
