Bay's New Product - - -

Bay Networks has released their 5660 and 5665 - basically the 350T in the 5000. It is a shame that they do not let the rest of the world know about it. Still marketing cripples after all these years.

I recently competed against the Cat 5000 and blew brand C out of the water with 10/100 autosensing to the desktop which callapsed to an Accelar 1200 for wire speed routing between Vlans. Cisco was pushing a flat network with their proprietary tagging strategy (for a lot more $)and the customer balked big time (wanted standards based IP network) and the flexability that a router can give in such a design.

My point - - Bay has brought per port cost down and port density up to the point that customers are making the decision to replace shared ports with 10/100 switched ports. This new product is very significant IMO. Also, the new products allow the combination of shared modules with switched ports in a common Vlan which gives the customer a choice.

Finally, Bay has plans to add 802.1Q which is the standard for communicating between Vlans in a flat (non-routed) network to the 5660 and 5665 in the next few months and to the Accelar in June which seems to be an effective selling point.
