May 28, 1998 Web posted at: 1:58 a.m. EDT (0558 GMT) JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Indonesia's new president and Parliament leaders said they would aim to hold a general election in 1999, once political reform laws can be passed, senior lawmakers said Thursday. The announcement follows a meeting between President B.J. Habibie and senior legislators at the Parliament in the capital. "We expect general elections will be held in 1999," said Irsyad Sudiro, the head of the ruling Golkar party's faction in Parliament. Parliament Speaker Harmoko said he and the president had agreed to expedite the enactment of laws to liberalize Indonesia's tightly controlled political system.
