That's right, Etrade doesn't sell mutual funds. (????) I think if you are short in etrade you might want to open an account so you can keep up with what's going on. Etrade is also branching out into other products such as online loans. As well as becomming international- most people don't live in the USA.

Anyway, from your post, it sounds like Schwab is getting squeezed from below by etrade, rather than the other way around. Etrade hasn't had to lower comissions, but schwab has.
